What’s this all about?
Hi there, my name is David. Thanks for checking out The Weekly Album review! The goal of this website is to create a community of music lovers and listeners, share our favorite albums, and discuss why they are so meaningful to us. I wanted to introduce myself, the idea behind this site, and a few basics about what it is I’ll be doing here.
To begin, let’s get one thing perfectly clear. I am no musical genius. I have learned and forgotten how to play the piano twice in my life. I can’t sing. I certainly don’t know music theory and I have never considered myself a musician. I won’t write about music on a technical level, I may try and fail, but that’s what the community is for. To learn.
With that being said, what I do know is that I feel music. No different than any one of you reading this blog right now. Music is unique to each and every one of us. Some people love punk rock, others can’t stand it. Some people love rap but don’t like 50 Cent. Some people will only listen to country when it’s the summer time (hand up, that’s me). I believe that that is the beauty of music. No matter what it is you prefer to listen to, you do it because it evokes emotion and memories. That doesn’t necessarily mean it’s all happy music all the time. Sometimes we want to put on “Cat’s in the Cradle” and cry. Sometimes we want to blast Rage Against the Machine and workout (hand up again, that’s me).
I have always enjoyed consuming albums top to bottom and that’s how the idea for this sprung about. Why not combine my two favorite things, writing and music, into one? Only took me 26 years to figure that one out. I’m a big believer in listening to music this way because , to me, it’s how the artist intended for people to listen. They’ve spent countless hours, days, and months to produce a piece of work that may only be 50 minutes long, but it’s their life’s work. That means something to them, and it sure means something to me. By listening this way you feel the album’s design, you get to question “Why did they put this song here?” or “What does this song make me think about?”, and you get to reduce the pressure of trying to find a new song to play once one it ends, something that we’ve grown accustomed to with music streaming services these days. To disappear into something, especially music, for an hour or more is a magical, some times therapeutic experience.
I am not here to tell you what songs are good or bad. I would never tell someone “this song isn’t good” when they share a song or album with me. Who am I to say that? If they enjoy it and it makes them feel what they want to feel, good for them. I would hate for someone to shoot down a song that means a lot to me. Now, I’m not in love with all music or musicians and there will be some albums that just aren’t for me and I will express that, but I promise to refrain from saying “it’s bad.”
So tune in each week as I will share my unfiltered (and sometimes biased) thoughts on an album that I already know, that I am hearing for the first time, or from suggestions from the contact form. I hope to create dialogue with readers, learn more about music, and add new artists/albums to everyone’s collections.
Thank you for being here. I hope you enjoy and participate.
P.S. I am an absolute sucker for two things in music. Harmonies and the saxophone. Gets me every time.
